The first Ukraine pavilion was successfully held at FOODEX Japan 2019 exhibition
FOODEX Japan exhibition, which is held annually in Tokyo was very special for Ukraine in 2019. The first time in the 44-year history of the exhibition was organized the first pavilion from Ukraine. The pavilion was attended by 13 companies that presented both agricultural products and food industries and organized by COIN company – Ukraine export development agency.
The start of the pavilion was preceded by active preparatory work in Ukraine and Japan. The pavilion was organized due to the support of such institutions as the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, headed by at. Minister Olga Trofimtseva, embassies of both countries, the Ukrainian office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations provided financial support to participants under the EU4BUSINESS project.
On March 4, on the eve of the start of the exhibition, COIN together with the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan organized a Ukrainian-Japanese food & agro forum. The forum was attended by business representatives and relevant government agencies of both countries. On the business side, the forum attended Ukraine pavilion participants, large and medium-sized trading companies in Japan, including ITOCHU and SUMITOMO corporations. On behalf of Ukraine, the forum was attended by a delegation of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy led by Oleksandr Zhemoida and a delegate from the EBRD, Mr. Vasyl Hovhera. From the Japanese side, the forum was attended by the Director of the Department of International Trade Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Japan, Mr. Manabu Yasuhara. In his speech to the forum participants, Mr. Yasuhara said: “I hope that the share of Ukrainian food imports to Japan will grow. Your country is a world-famous center of agricultural production ... we are interested in oilseeds, honey, and other categories where the quality and taste characteristics of products will meet our requirements.
The key event in the opening ceremony of the exhibition is the cutting of the red ribbon by the ambassadors of the countries participating in the exhibition. For the first time in 44 years, the ribbon was cut by the Ambassador of Ukraine, Mr. Ihor Kharchenko. Later, the delegation of the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan headed by Mr. Ihor Kharchenko, the delegation of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy headed by Oleksandr Zhemoida and the delegate from the EBRD visited the participants of the pavilion and talked to each of them personally.
At the end of the exhibition, the organizers conducted a survey of participants regarding their assessment of participation in the exhibition and pavilion. All participants praised the results of their participation and the level of organization of the pavilion, and look forward to deepening cooperation with Japanese importers in the future.
